It’s the fourth book in the River series, continuing from the end of River Pacifico.
River Heat is set in two timelines, the current and the past ten years.
River will attempt to rescue twin boys who have been abducted and used to start a regional conflict. All the major powers have declined to help, but River and his team will attempt the impossible. He might get in, but can he ever get out?
An extract from River Heat, “Aisha jumped up just as two men came through the store entrance. They were both armed; she aimed at the one on the right and fired several times. He fell forward and over to the left. The wounded member of her security team was on his knees and firing at the second newcomer. He hit the man twice but then fell forward with a knife in his back and the female assistant standing over him.
Aisha looked at the entrance; it was clear she could make it!
She took the first step towards the entrance but paused, ‘her sons!’ She stopped and spun around. The assistant by the counter was standing by her two sons and was holding a large knife with blood dripping from it. She smiled at Aisha, and for the first time, Aisha noticed the bodies of the Manager and the other female assistant behind the counter.
Just then, two more men came through the entrance. Aisha started towards her sons; she could see their eyes wide with fright. She raised the automatic to shoot the woman with the knife but was slammed in the back by two shots that knocked her to the floor, her automatic smashed from her grip and spinning over to the feet of the grinning assistant.
‘Get up,’ she screamed at herself, ‘save them.’
But her body was not responding; she frantically scratched at the floor, trying to get to her knees, but a man gripped her hair and pulled her backward. She was dragged on her back towards the entrance.”
